Friday. Day three. Me and Cruz were working the afternoon beat in the science lab like always, when…

Sorry. I’ve been watching a lot of Dragnet episodes lately.

It was the third day of detention. In the time that had elapsed since I’d squashed Tanner’s massive ego like a bug, there hadn’t been two words between us. I liked it that way. I’d even stopped thinking of Tanner as a trained monkey. Mostly. I should have known it couldn’t last.

“Got a girlfriend?”

I dropped my pencil with a start.

“Um…no…I mean, not right now.”

“Oh.” Tanner crossed his arms and his expression turned thoughtful. “I just figured that since you sat with the same girl at lunch everyday…” As his voice trailed off, he shot a glance in my direction.

“Elaine?” I squeaked, trying not to let my growing alarm show. “No, she’s been a friend—just a friend—since were kids. Little, little kids…”

This was an interesting development—Tanner was paying attention. That could be good, or it could be bad. Good, from the standpoint that maybe he was just trying to make polite conversation. Bad, from the standpoint that maybe he’s sensed he’d touched a nerve and maybe wanted to probe a little deeper. Really bad, from the standpoint that he might blab to his buddies he’s uncovered another one o’ them-thar sissy boys.

“W-why do you ask?” I was trying like hell to sound casual.

“Aaa, no reason.” Tanner started swiveling to and fro on his lab stool. “Just makin’ conversation.”

“Hmm.” I tried to look like I was really concentrating on my homework.

“So, you had one?”

“Well, I…no.”

“Oh.”

I started leafing through my textbook, trying to send out leave me alone vibes as hard as I could.

“I wouldn’t worry,” he said. “You’re a cute kid. Get a little meat on your bones and you could be a real heartbreaker.”

“Huh?”

“That’s what some of the girls say.”

Danger! Danger! Time to change the subject.

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

Tanner looked down at his feet with an amused expression. When he looked back up, he had that megawatt smile.

“Beth’s great,” he said. “Do you know her?”

“No…I mean yes, I know who she is.”

“Yeah, she’s great.”

“Um…okay.”

“I mean…well…she’s cute, she’s funny…”

Tanner was looking out the window pensively as he sat atop one of the lab stools, swinging his long legs back and forth. I took this as an opportunity to go back to my homework.

“I can help you,” he said, at last.

“Yeah, right,” I said dismissively. “This is college level chemistry.”

“Oh, man,” he said. “You really do live in your own little world, don’cha?”

If only. I put down my pencil and turned.

“What in hell are you talking about?”

“I could help you get bigger.”

“Huh?”

“That is, if you want.”

“Say what?”

“Remember I told you my dad’s a strength training coach?”

“I guess.”

“He’s taught me all about weights,” Tanner said enthusiastically. “I’ve been working out since I was thirteen.”

Like that was a surprise. I rolled my eyes and turned back to my work. A split second later, Tanner was looming at my side.

“I’m serious,” he said defensively. “I think you could get a lot out of it.
